An important aspect of driving is positional awareness. Knowing where everyone around you is while driving is crucial. Luckily, every car is equipped with mirror technology that helps us scan our surroundings efficiently. So how does one set up their mirrors correctly?!
Before adjusting each mirror, you need to be familiar with the car’s dimensions. Depending on your height and the type of car you are driving, adjust your seat to a comfortable position. Once settled, start adjusting your mirrors to cover your blind spots.
1) Rear View Mirror:
Although most modern cars are provided with rear view cameras, it is still essential to adjust your mirror to view the entire rear window – just make sure no objects are placed at the back to obstruct your vision.
2) Left Mirror:
The left mirror’s purpose is to identify fast cars and over-takers on the left side of your car, so adjusting it to get a clear view is vital. How?! First sit in the driver’s seat and lean to your left until your head touches the window. From this position, adjust the position of the left mirror until you see the rear corner of the car, then returning to the driving position, you should be able to see the adjacent road clearly.
3) Right Mirror:
To complete the process, adjusting the right mirror is imperative yet quite simple. When in the driving position, lean towards the window on the right. From this position, adjust the position of the mirror until you see the rear corner of the car. Then when returning to the driving position, you should be able to see the entire road on your right.
Now that you have adjusted your mirrors, always check your blind spots before taking any action when driving.
